Ad Hoc Monumental Hotel

The noise was the dealbreaker for me. The walls were so thin that we could hear people talking in the next room even when they weren’t being especially loud. The hotel has historic architecture and charming decor, and sits on a quiet street close enough to walk to the main sights. But it feels worn and out of date. The room-numbered keys seem like a safety issue, and one was broken. In the bathroom, the grout was dingy and moldy in places, the curtains had holes, and the whole place looked tired. The bed was too hard for me as a side sleeper. About 3.5 stars, rounded up, but I wouldn’t stay again.

On our first trip to Spain from the US, I emailed the hotel with questions before arrival, including about its airport transfer service. “Gabriel” replied once, but never responded to my later messages, even though I could see they’d been opened. We decided to book nearby Caro Hotel instead. It was excellent, and they had the added bonus of replying to emails.

The bed was comfortable, but felt so rickety that I was afraid it would break. For what I paid at Ad Hoc Monumental, the worn, outdated facilities didn’t feel like good value. I’d stayed at Catalonia Excelsior for less, and it was noticeably better. My room was very small, with old style outlets in awkward spots and nowhere set aside for luggage, so my bag ended up on the floor. The amenities were sparse: a kettle and two teabags, but no coffee, creamers or minibar. Around 1:30 a.m., loud noises from what sounded like someone showering next door woke me. The walls are thin, and sound travels easily. It has a quaint, charming look, and the location is cute, but the place feels worn and I think the price should reflect that. I also had trouble with the TV. A staff member said they’d come help, but nobody showed up. Overall, I didn’t feel it was worth the cost.

A lovely old style hotel. Roberto at reception was especially helpful when I checked in. One small concern: the shower can be slippery, so a mat might help prevent a slip or fall.
