Hotel Gran Rey

The friendly, youthful feel around Valle Gran Rey carries through the hotel, and the price seemed very reasonable for the location and quality. It sits right on the ocean, a short stroll from the seaside promenade and several beaches. Cafés and restaurants are nearby, with supermarkets and more places to eat a short drive away. Whale watching boats leave from the harbor, about five minutes away by car. Guest rooms are on the first two of the three floors. The rooftop level has a large pool and the breakfast room, while a separate dining room on the ground floor serves an optional buffet dinner for €20 per person. Our room was roomy, older but very clean and well maintained. The bed wasn’t especially large, but was exceptionally comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and everything worked. There was air conditioning, a small fridge, hairdryer, and decent Wi-Fi. The safe is available too, though with this three star property its key costs €5 for up to 24 hours. Parking gets difficult in the evening. There’s a large public lot next to the hotel and free street parking, but spaces fill quickly after about 5 pm. The hotel’s private parking behind the building was a very reasonable €4 a day and a helpful option for later arrivals. Breakfast on the third floor was excellent and varied, with pastries, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, jam, eggs made to order, several coffee machines, and a fresh orange juice press. The dining area is spacious and has a terrace looking out over the Atlantic, a lovely way to start the day. Service throughout the hotel was friendly and efficient. In my view, this is one of the best hotels in La Gomer.

The location made it easy to wander down to the port or head toward Playa del Ingles, with plenty of restaurants in either direction. La Caleta is worth a walk too, for its narrow lanes and local feel. Back at Gran Rey, every member of staff, from reception and housekeeping to the restaurant and maintenance team, was genuinely welcoming. The hotel and rooms were spotless, with daily cleaning. Breakfast had a decent selection, and dinner brought plenty of variety. The pool is small, but never seemed crowded, and there was no rush for loungers. Hardly anyone used the pool area until later in the afternoon, perhaps because they were out walking in Garonjay National Park. Thanks to all the staff for making us feel at home on your island.

The rooftop pool was clean and looked after, with enough length and depth for a proper swim. In January the water averaged 22°C, which may feel chilly to some, though it kept me swimming. Our room was comfortable, especially the bed, and the cheerful housekeeping staff kept it very clean. Both breakfast and the buffet dinner were consistently good, with plenty to choose from and local ingredients when available. Everyone was friendly and professional, and made an effort to welcome guests. The hotel is well placed for hiking, and there was even a boot-washing spot outside the entrance. It also suits a slower seaside break in Valle Gran Rey. A wonderful place in beautiful surroundings. I'd gladly recommend Hotel Gran Rey and hope to come back.
