We chose Hotel Vielha Val d'Arán for its central location, which made it easy to walk around town and reach shops and restaurants. Four of us stayed for two nights in September, though we ate elsewhere so we could explore the area. The mountain and valley views are spectacular, and a river runs right beside the hotel. It’s a peaceful, welcoming place, with a large free public car park next door as well as an underground one. Our room was roomy enough and comfortable, with lots of cupboards, coat hooks, a safe and air conditioning. The bed was especially comfortable, and everything was spotless. There was also a kettle, coffee maker and supplies. In the bathroom we had a walk-in shower, bidet, toiletries, two dressing gowns, slippers and a hairdryer. The reception lounge is nicely set up with sofas and armchairs, a pool table and big windows that let in plenty of daylight. The staff were professional, friendly and gave excellent service. The pool facilities cost €5 per person. Towels are laid out on the loungers, and there are refreshments, a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The pool timetable gives families separate times to enjoy the space. One person in our group used the gym and said it had everything he needed, with the room to himself. I’d highly recommend the hotel.

I’d say avoid this hotel unless you’re in danger of having nowhere to stay. The smell starts in the lobby, gets impossible to miss in the lift, and lingers in the bedroom too, though I could get used to that one. The breakfast room was the worst. There were flies on the unappealing food, and I even found hair on the syrup bottle. One day I took a plate from the clean stack and some unknown sticky liquid dripped from it onto my foot. I’ve felt less worried about my stomach eating street food and drinking in places like Nepal, India and Myanmar than I did in that breakfast hall.

For around 250€, they call it a duplex room, but the noise made this a really bad stay. At 6pm, I could hear the neighbor on the left talking on the phone as if he were in our room. I hoped the night would be quieter, but at 10pm some women came back and talked loudly next door, and with no sound insulation, we heard everything. The worst part came at 7:30am, when a child shouted for at least an hour and a half, then the mother started too. Very, very bad experience.

A nice city and a good place to stay. Things were generally fine, though we could hear noise from other rooms. There was also a smell when the snack bar opened.

The hotel feels a little dated, but the staff more than make up for the shortcomings. The restaurant and dining room team were especially good, from Fabian right through to the man cooking the meat on the grill. The cleaning staff also did an amazing job, especially considering the duplex apartments. The people here are the hotel’s real strength.
