The staff were lovely, the grounds beautiful, and the rooms very comfortable. Free parking is a real bonus, and Hotel Pazo de los Escudos makes a good base for exploring Galicia. The spa massages were decent. The restaurant food was very nice, though it came on cold plates and didn’t stay warm long. The chart music playing on the radio didn’t suit the atmosphere I’d expect from a 5-star dining experience. A few things stopped it feeling like a true five-star stay. The white marble bar felt clinical and unwelcoming, and its terrace was in the shade in the evening, so it got chilly quickly even in September. We’d asked well in advance for a double bed but ended up with two singles. It’s a good hotel with excellent staff and facilities, but lacked the warm, luxurious home away from home feeling I’d expect at this level.

Our third-floor, top-level room had a balcony and a delightful sea view across the ocean to the hills opposite. It was extremely quiet and peaceful, with hardly anyone else on our floor. Maybe June was out of season? The hotel was comfortable and lovely, and exceeded what we expected from its online presentation. Service was generally good, though we didn’t need much from the staff. The town side isn’t especially attractive, but there are beautiful beaches with soft white sand and plenty of seaside walks right nearby. There’s free parking below, with a lift straight up to the room.

The room was spacious and clean, and the bed and pillows were super comfortable. The bathroom was large, with both a shower and a tub, and all the amenities were provided. We only missed having a chair, armchair, or sofa, which kept this from being a five-star stay.

The sea is right there, with a lovely view and the sound of the waves whenever you want it. You can rent a bike from the hotel or explore on foot. The old and newer buildings work well together for the rooms, bar and restaurant, and the business is thoughtfully organized. Guest service is strong too, from valet parking to the smart, helpful reception and guest services team.

The ria views are beautiful, and there’s plenty of space outdoors, with gardens and other green areas. The property has rooms, restaurants, event rooms and a pool. It’s a gorgeous restoration of a Galician pazo, a country residence once associated with Galician nobles. The main entrance is covered in armory shields, escudos, which is how the place got its name. From what I found, there are 101 of them.
