Gondar Plaza Hotel

The café’s outdoor terrace is a relaxing spot, and the food was delicious. Our room was very clean, the beds comfortable, and breakfast was excellent and free. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the security camera gave me peace of mind.

The food and drinks were great, and the bar has everything you need. Rooms were very clean and well organized, with great housekeeping and room service. The staff and management were thoughtful and quick to help. A very wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend Gondar Plaza Hotel to anyone visiting Gondar.

The restaurant food was good, and the Axumite dessert wine wasn’t too sweet. There’s a small grocery next door for snacks, drinks, and toiletries, and across the road is a traditional restaurant with dancing. The hotel is modern, though a little farther from the city sights. Staff from the doorman to the cleaning crew were friendly and very helpful, and most spoke some English. There’s no air conditioning, but the staff kindly brought us a fan. There’s also no elevator, and some rooms are on the 4th floor. Our room was spacious and clean, with good water pressure and hot water in the shower, though the controls were a little fiddly. The flat screen TV had CNN and BBC.

WARNING: My bag was stolen at this hotel. I lost my key and called to ask the manager to rekey my door. When I returned, my bag was gone. At first I thought somebody had found the key and entered the room, which seemed unlikely but possible given the poor hotel security. Then staff made multiple contradictory and suspicious statements, both directly to me and through the owner, which led me to suspect them. The owner relayed statements from staff that were clearly false, then backed away from them when I challenged him. He never followed up with the final investigation or gave a credible explanation for the suspicious comments. That made me more concerned about the staff and whether the owner cared. I don’t consider this a safe place to stay. It’s well outside the main tourist area, so there’s no reason to stay here.
