Giellajohka

We're back for the fourth time, right in the middle of winter, with our Toyota Hilux AluCab. This campsite has become a place we look forward to during our travels through Lapland, somewhere to properly recharge. The lounge is warm and has a fireplace, the kitchen is excellent, the hot showers are spacious, and there's a sauna. Add a campfire and the Northern Lights, and it's a great stay. Above all, you feel welcome, surrounded by warmth and good vibes. Highly recommended! 🤍

I was traveling alone from Canada and booked Giellajohka Hostel in September 2025 for one night in December 2025. The confirmation email said they'd give me a phone number for questions, but I never got one, and I did have questions. The hostel is in northern Finland, where signal is limited. It was late, I had no data, and although I'd downloaded maps over WiFi before setting out, I couldn't find the place. I had GPS and cell service, but when I tried to call for directions, I realized I hadn't been given their number. In the end I didn't stay there. After the trip, I emailed Giellajohka Hostel. The staff said I could have reconnected online in Inari, which would have added 1.5 hours and 120 km. They also said, "I should have done better my homework with paper map like in the old days." I had no trouble staying at other hostels during my week in Lapland. They offered a 55E discount on a future stay, but I don't plan to return. Plenty of friendlier hostels around. I'd avoid this place unless you want a hassle.

We really enjoyed this family-run cottage/hotel and only wished we'd stayed longer to enjoy the area properly. The owners were lovely and helpful, even helping us with a problem with our car battery. I'd highly recommend the place if you're planning a visit to finish Lapland.

We had a peaceful stay at Giellajohka, a hidden gem in Finnish Lapland surrounded by untouched wilderness. The cabins are cozy, with fireplaces and large windows where you can watch the Northern Lights from inside. Someone from the staff or the owners is usually around to help make the stay memorable. The setting works well for outdoor activities, from hiking, fishing, and skiing to snowshoeing on nearby trails and fishing along the riverbank. It's right next to Kevo Nature Reserve. There's a small restaurant serving local reindeer soup and salmon breakfasts. Staff offer advice and gear rentals, and even send WhatsApp alerts when the aurora is out. Between the outdoor options and the chance to simply relax, it blends Lapland culture with the comforts you need. Prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is quiet. A friendly, unique, and magical place to stay.
