The room was clean and breakfast was okay, so it could work for a night or a stopover. But on my recent trip to James Cook Hotel, there were several problems. There was no secure parking, which felt unsafe for anyone travelling with a vehicle. Nobody serviced the room on the second day: towels and toiletries weren't refreshed, and there was no TV in the room.

Chef Rahul went out of his way to work around our dining needs. The staff were friendly and had good personalities. Excellent customer service, and I'd highly recommend this hotel.

The room itself was okay, with a nice firm bed and a mini fridge for cold food. The young Fijian receptionists were friendly and helpful, and the location is convenient. A few things made the stay difficult: the door didn't work properly, there was no phone, and the TV wasn't working. There's no divider between the shower and toilet, so the bathroom gets wet every time I shower. The insulation is poor, too. I could hear water draining from my own or other bathrooms, and people walking along the hallway.

James Cook Hotel was clean, and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Special thanks to Miri at Reception, and to Marianna, Sereani, and Sunita in Dining. The location also made it easy to use public transport and explore Suva by local bus. We had a lot of fun and met lovely, helpful Fijians. The basics were mixed. Breakfast was very simple, and the coffee machines and toasters had problems, though we managed for the few days we were there. The TV was never available because services were always down. Suva itself was beautiful and busy, but everywhere seemed to promise more than it delivered.

This was my second visit, five nights in room 5004, and I think the value here beats GBH and HI down the road. The grounds are relaxing, with food and drinks onsite, new sitting areas, BBQ dinner, and a pool. There's a courtyard to sit and read, and it's only about a three-minute walk to the sea wall by crossing Albert Park, or down the hill to Suva city. I recommend being polite and kind to the staff, who were always approachable and willing to help. The food was outstanding at lunch and dinner, and the chef made it the way I liked. Breakfast was included, with plenty of choice and eggs cooked perfectly. Parking is free, and you can come and go through the gate; staff are happy to open it for you. The view is great, and the room was clean and well looked after. Housekeeping did a great job, towels were white and stain-free, and toiletries were available or provided on request. The shower had good pressure and steady hot water. The bathroom floor dries by itself after a shower, so the wet floor wasn't a concern for me. Lilly, the GM, was onsite, which helped with after-hours needs. I slept well each night in the comfortable bed with clean pillows, and the AC kept the room at a good temperature. The TV isn't connected, but that didn't bother me. I read, walked, and rested instead. Some previous reviews had negative comments, but after five nights on my second stay, I wanted to share how it went for me. I've found my place in Suva and plan to stay here again.
