Hôtel Ithurria - Les Collectionneurs

The hotel itself was very pleasant, but I’d give the restaurant two stars. Our meal at Ithurria was disappointing: despite its Michelin star, the food didn’t impress us in either taste or presentation. My husband and I both had terrible stomach aches afterward and didn’t sleep that night. The dessert was very nice and ended dinner on a better note, but it couldn’t rescue the experience.

The welcome from the staff was warm, and they stayed attentive throughout our meal. We were with a group on an excursion through the Basque countryside, and the drive to the beautiful village of Ainhoa was spectacular. The multi-course meal was very good, as were the wine choices, and the restaurant has earned a Michelin star. There’s also a letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower, later President of the United States, recognizing the owner’s important help to the war effort during WWII, when Eisenhower was Supreme Allied Commander.

The main street through town is the biggest downside. It’s a busy route into Spain, so you hear road noise. Still, I really enjoyed the hotel, the restaurant, and the nice bar. The food was good and creative, with a Basque feel.

The maitre d' really stood out to me. He clearly loves his work, and brings so much warmth and finesse to it. The staff were top notch, and the meal was delicious from beginning to end. Bravo!
