Place des Cardeurs has plenty of bars and restaurants, making it a lively center of life in Aix-en-Provence. The square stands where the Jewish quarter was during the Middle Ages, but it wasn’t created until 1963. To make room for it, a block of rundown houses and narrow winding lanes was demolished, and the space was lined with renovated classic houses.
We had dinner there last night, and the meal was very good. The square was lively in the evening and had a great atmosphere for eating or just having a drink. Most people seemed to be there for drinks. We went at 19:30, which may have been a little early for dinner.
We stopped for wine and nibbles on this beautiful stepped, sloping plaza. It was a peaceful, pretty place to take a break in Aix-en-Provence, with some high quality restaurants.
We came up here almost by accident from the underground car park, right beside Le Rendezvous restaurant, which worked out well because we were hungry. Try the "salad pizza" with rocket (arugula), it was quite delicious. They say it’s for one, but that’s probably only true if you’re starving.
There were lots of students about, which gave the place a lively, youthful atmosphere. It was a really fun spot to stop for a drink later in the afternoon.
