Val D'Aleth

The garden at Le Val D’Aleth was a lovely place to spend time, and our hosts took great care of us throughout our seven-night stay. We were there in mid-to-late June 2024, staying in a modernly renovated part of a 12th-century medieval town rampart. The room was cleaned daily, we slept soundly, and towels were changed every 2-3 days. Meals were delicious, homely and healthy, and easy on my weak stomach. Our host Amelie, who also speaks English, was always happy to point out places to see, including spots 30 minutes to an hour away by car. We explored the peaceful surroundings on walks and drives through the scenic hills and plains, and the village itself is lovely to stroll around. The 9th-century medieval abbey church is next door, and the natural setting kept us busy. Nearby outdoor activities include rafting, walking, trekking and hiking, though the village may get crowded in summer. Parking was plentiful during our visit, across the junction, by the school wall or along the street. One afternoon we picked up lunch from a friendly gentleman’s little painting café: a delicious vegetable galette for E7.40, croissants for 1.18 and cafe au lait for 1.8. The seven nights went by quickly. I’d recommend staying longer rather than just passing through, since a short visit isn’t enough to explore the area thoroughly.

We were a group of eight friends and had four different rooms for one night. Dinner was a highlight: we shared tomato, feta and melon salad, generous servings of lasagna with green salad, and apricot clafoutis. We savored it all. Before dinner we relaxed and chatted in the garden, then played board games on the terrace in the evening. Breakfast was plentiful and very good, just right before our canoeing activity a short distance from the guesthouse. The place is peaceful, and our stay was simply perfect. We highly recommend it. The room was lovely and nicely heated, and the hosts were so kind. We ate really well, with a generous breakfast and delicious evening meals. We spent a few days here and found it a perfect base for exploring the area. I loved our stay, and we’d be happy to come back.

Our hosts were kind and attentive, the rooms were comfortable, clean and well looked after, and breakfast was generous with plenty of variety. A really pleasant, restorative stay.
