The food was a real highlight. The duck confit with polenta was a 9.5/10 for me, and it was the best meal we had in the region. Great food can be hit or miss in the countryside, but they really got it right here. The whole place has an easy, homely feel. I could head out cycling at 7:30 before breakfast and they’d happily bring coffee and croissants. Even once breakfast was over, we could sit in the courtyard with everything still set out. Nobody made us feel rushed, and it felt more like staying with friends than at a hotel. Katrina is warm and funny, and she and her husband made us feel welcome and helped a lot when our car broke down. The staff and service were wonderful. The château is beautifully kept, with clean, comfortable rooms, air conditioning and fantastic views. The garden, pool and indoor and outdoor dining areas were lovely places to unwind with dinner, wine and a smoke. The setting is stunning too, close to several villages worth seeing, vineyards and good cycling routes.

The room and bed were very comfortable, and the hotel is well placed for visiting local attractions. It was also absolutely calm, a lovely place to relax. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming, and we had delicious, imaginative food on both evenings we dined there.

The dinner was fresh and good, with a modern French style, and the staff were genuinely nice. Still, for the price level, the service lacked the attentiveness and polish I’d expect from a high-class hotel. It could be hard to find anyone between lunch and the afternoon, and staff weren’t always alert to what guests needed. As experienced travellers, we know what service should look like at this price, and I hope they address that fairly quickly. The Lalande chateau sits in lovely grounds and landscape. It can feel a little disorienting when you first enter, before you reach the chateau itself, but there are different terraces to explore around the house and a picturesque pool. The room had a lovely antique 18th-century style. I did miss having a minibar, and international guests might appreciate international TV programmes.

We ended up having dinner at the chateau every evening, even though there were plenty of other good options nearby. The hosts gave spectacular recommendations, and the food was amazing. It’s a wonderful chateau and property, in a great spot with attractions in every direction.

The owners were really friendly and helpful, and it was very quiet with lots of green space around the lovely castle. Having dinner in the garden was a great experience. The food was good, though restaurant service felt inefficient. The internet connection and Wi-Fi were a complete disaster.
