What stays with me most is the welcome. We were invited to join the hosts’ cheerful table, then they suggested a simple nearby restaurant for another dinner. When we came back, they welcomed us again and invited us to share a toast. That warmth felt wonderfully familiar, like the hospitality you can still find in the south of France and in our own south of Italy. The place is an old, noble mas on the Crau plain between Provence and Camargue, kept intact with great care. We found it at the last minute on our way back from a holiday in the Hérault. It’s hard to preserve a building’s character without giving in to modern renovations, and here the warmth and charm have survived. We slept in a very comfortable bed in this historic farmhouse, on the old road between Salon and Arles, lined with centuries-old plane trees. It was a clear, full-moon night, with the mistral blowing hard, and it felt like a dream inside a dream. In the morning there was a roomy, practical bathroom, then a generous breakfast with delicious local products and homemade jams. We talked with the owners and other guests in the spacious garden. Leaving was sad, though the owners’ embrace and conversations about bulls and young bullfighters made it easier. They invited us to come back and relive the day. We’ll return soon for that magical, relaxing atmosphere. Heartfelt thanks to the owners.

The room faced the road, so it was very noisy. The bathroom was upstairs.
