Hôtel du Pont d'Ascain

The friendly, helpful staff were the highlight. There’s plenty of parking off the road, and although the hotel is on the main road, we could barely hear traffic. I had a nice view of the river and the mountains beyond during my one night stay off peak. It’s a two star hotel, so I wasn’t expecting lots of amenities, but the essentials were there, plus a few useful extras. The buffet breakfast was fine for the price. For the best rate by far, book directly. I did so on arrival, but keep in mind Reception closes in the evening.

We were travelling as a large family with four kids and found a family room. All the beds were in one area, but that worked for us. It’s not a high-end place, though the service felt fair for what we paid. It’s close to the Spanish-French border, and especially handy for St. Jean de Luz. If you’re driving into the city, this could be a good, inexpensive option.

The receptionist was very helpful, keeping my bike safe and lending me cutlery and other things. I got a very good rate through Booking. The room was at the back, so it was quiet, and the balcony looked over the river. The hotel is on the main road, with a short walk into town. It’s an interesting little place with plenty of eateries.

The rooms are basic, and noise carries badly between them. It’s easy to find on the road from St Jean de Luz. Maybe it’d be nicer to sit on the terrace if the restaurant reopens.
