The walk into Avallon takes around 20 minutes, and it’s easy going since the route is flat. We were welcomed so warmly, and the woman looking after us was incredibly patient with our limited French. Our room was spacious, clean, and lovely. The only drawback was the hard pillows, which left me with a stiff neck, so I’d give it four stars.

We couldn’t stay more than two hours. Both rooms had a damp, musty smell, and the staff neither offered another room nor seemed able to help. My son felt sick, but we still paid the full amount before leaving. The hotel replied that this had never been reported before and that staff couldn’t smell anything when they checked. I later found one review on a popular booking site, dated 2/1/24, that mentioned a “persistent smell.” That’s the only other online comment I found, so make up your own mind.

The staff were wonderful, especially when they found my lost camera. We also appreciated having a private off-road car park and gardens. The pool outside was larger and better than we’d expected, and the bright ground-floor area looks out over it. At check-in, the receptionist walked us to our room, which was really nice and better than we’d anticipated, particularly with the air conditioning. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this lovely hotel.

Having a secure place to park was a real plus, and the pool was a welcome extra. We had a great room with a big bed and air conditioning, and enjoyed the breakfast too. Thanks to the staff for being so friendly and helpful, and for patiently bearing with our attempts at French.
