We liked the boat so much that we added a third night, and had an excellent dinner onboard that was budget friendly. The breakfasts were excellent too, a great way to start a day exploring Avignon. Hotel Chardonnay is an old barge in a prime spot on the waterfront beside the Palace of the Popes. From the starboard side of the upper deck you can see the ancient city walls, while the port side looks out over the Rhone. We preferred the city view from the two lovely armchairs by the floor to ceiling windows. The cabin and the rest of the boat have an old fashioned feel. The cabin isn't huge compared with a modern hotel room on land, but it was quite adequate. There is also plenty of shared space. With a maximum capacity of about 50 people, the dining room, adjoining bar and aperitif lounge feel roomy. At the very front of the main deck, a large saloon has 180 degree views ahead. It's a terrific spot to open a laptop or have a quiet afternoon coffee. The staff were excellent, genuinely cheerful and friendly, and seemed to care about the boat and the guests. We loved the old world charm and the affordable price. Better than a hotel, and easier on the pocket.

The room was pleasant, with a large sliding window and a refurbished bathroom. Staff were especially helpful: they let us switch to a room facing the water to get away from the traffic noise. It had two small beds, but they rearranged the furniture to make a single bed for us. Some of the staff also work on the nearby little ferry across the Rhone, so they know how it runs day to day. They're great people, which can be hard to find in touristy Mediterranean cities.

The crew were kind and accommodating, and the boat has lovely views you can take in from your room, the dining room, or the lounge. This was our first time staying on a boat, and it was a really fun, unusual experience. Check which side your room faces, though. From the side nearer the bank, you may occasionally spot nutria.

The crew's service stood out. They were friendly and did their best to help make our stay pleasant. The location is great, by the river and no more than a 10 minute walk from the Palace, bridge, and city center. The rooms are nice, with a charming, typical old cabin style. The bathroom is a bit dated, but everything works.

On June 19, 2024, we couldn't get to the hotel by car, so we had to change our booking. What a pity, since it's a nice hotel.
