Le Manoir de la Giraudière

After driving 500 miles from Spain toward the Channel Tunnel, we wanted a drink and a friendly welcome, and this wasn’t the place for that. The building is quaint, and our bed was comfortable; the room was spacious and clean. But the kettle and two mugs came with no tea, coffee, or milk. When we asked for a drink on arrival, the receptionist suggested driving 6 km to get one. The signs weren’t clear either, and we wandered around tired before figuring out where reception was. A cold breakfast was offered for 9 euros per person, but there was no information about what it included, so we went elsewhere. The bar and restaurant were closed due to Covid, though other bars and restaurants are now open. My partner didn’t think it deserved three stars. We’d look for somewhere else first if we’re in the area again. Sorry.

The location is nice, and the people working here are too. There’s a Mc Donald's and a bakery nearby. Rooms vary a lot: my first one smelled damp and old and was poorly lit, so I asked to move. The replacement was great, and at that room’s price, the stay was worth it.

Dinner was fantastic, especially the lapin, and breakfast was good value, with charcuterie and cheese as well as the usual items. The hotel is lovely and the setting is beautiful. It’s well worth the price, with free Wi-Fi at good speed. You’re not really close to anything on foot, but there’s a nice bike and walking path. Mind the low doorway.

The staff are wonderful, the rooms are comfortable, and the chef is good. The decor is a little faded.
