Camping Chantemerle

We had such a lovely time swimming in the river and staying in the tipihome. Even in the blazing sun, there were plenty of places to swim along the riverbanks. Now we understand why our friends return every year. Merci for everything, we’d happily recommend it!

The staff were really friendly and helpful, and I’d stay here again. We were in a basic static caravan, which did what we needed since we spent most of our time on its veranda. The double bed was a bit small. There was a good-sized fridge freezer, but no oven. The cheap plastic patio furniture was disappointing, especially compared with what the Tepees had. The restaurant had good-value pizzas, steak frites, salads and burgers. That’s much like what you find at local restaurants, as this isn’t a great area for cuisine. It’s about a 45-minute walk into Florac, mostly along one of the GR routes beside the river. You have to clean the caravan yourself or pay a €40 charge. That seemed odd to me. I’ve never had to clean a hotel room.

The river-facing pitch we picked was peaceful, with lovely views and a great spot for swimming and watching beavers. We were welcomed warmly and got to choose our pitch. The staff were all so friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed the small restaurant enough to eat there three nights out of four. After three weeks travelling through France and Spain, this was one of our favourite stops. We’ll definitely come back!

There’s a slow-moving, safe stretch of river on site, with a little sandy beach, and a rustic restaurant serving tasty food. Book ahead for both the restaurant and campsite in high season, as they can fill up. The staff are lovely and always glad to help with reservations or suggestions. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place, just right if you like a quiet campsite. I couldn’t recommend it more.
