My room felt damp and suffocating. There was no air conditioning, and the only windows were the small square ones shown in the pictures, which couldn't be opened. The broken glass door opened straight onto the public parking area at street level, so there was no real privacy or sense of security. This doesn't match what I'd call a European four-star hotel, and it falls well short of even a two-star bed and breakfast. The safe seems to have been added for an audit, but it isn't plugged in and there's no outlet nearby. I wish Atout France or the Consumer Office would inspect the place and fine them appropriately so other people don't have to go through this. If you decide to stay anyway, at least I've warned you. Look closely at the photos of my room before booking.

The location was good, but we felt we were treated differently because we were British. When I raised it with the woman at the desk, she was rude and didn't seem to care at all. There was no air conditioning, so we had to leave the windows open to cool the rooms. Being so close to the quayside and local bars meant hearing drunk people at one or two in the morning. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to groups or British visitors, as we were treated differently from everyone else.

The WiFi was my one real gripe. It makes you go through a pointless login, accepts any nonsense, and then asks you to do it again whenever you return to the hotel. That's badly out of date. Hotels should stop using it, or at least fix it so each device only needs to log in once. We were there during a heat wave and got room 501, which has windows on both sides of the building, so we could get a through-draught at night. The hotel was very pleasant, and the staff were attentive.

Benodet is still my favourite port of call after more than 60 years sailing along the coast of Brittany. It's so peaceful, a welcome bit of tranquillity in this tumultuous world. Our room looked out over the estuary, and the view was marvellous. The hotel is old, but that view feels timeless.
