Best Western Citadelle

We loved the breakfast and our room, and the hotel’s close to the city centre. The service was first class, with professional, attentive staff, especially Pierre. It’s a beautiful boutique hotel with loads of character. Besançon itself is an amazing place that deserves its own positive review. We’ll definitely come back one day soon!

The staff were friendly, and breakfast was tasty, though it was fairly simple for €15,- per person and took a long time to be replenished. Our classic room was basic and clean, but one towel was full of holes, as shown in the pictures. The so-called ‘Queensize bed’ was alright, though definitely narrower than the 1.6m-wide bed we have at home. A so-so stay, it could have been worse or better.

The rooms are nice, though a little small if you plan to spend much time in them. The hotel sits in the southwestern corner of the old town, so it’s nearly half a mile’s walk to the real centre, but the location is still good. The Wi-Fi blocks VPN use. I don’t understand why, since it means anyone at or near the hotel could monitor you accessing your bank account and other things. I need Wi-Fi every day, so that would keep me from returning.

My room was large, with a skylight and a king-size bed, and the bathroom was also roomy. I especially appreciated the walk-in shower, given my mobility issues on this trip. The hotel is close enough to the city centre to walk, yet far enough away to avoid the noise. It’s a lovely historic hotel, with beautifully decorated shared spaces. The breakfast buffet had a good range, including healthy choices, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
