Staying here was like being stuck in an episode of Fawlty Towers. The hotel feels badly dated and neglected, with stained, smelly carpets and tired decor. The service was chaotic the whole way through, with disorganized staff and constant confusion. I’d never choose to stay here again.

The meal was a real highlight for me. I’m a picky eater, but I liked most of what the restaurant served, and the waiters were kind and helpful. Breakfast was fine too, with plenty of bread, croissants, yoghurt and cereal, even though some people thought the selection was limited. We stayed for five days on a school trip. The hotel is simple, with minimalist rooms and little decoration; a few decorative touches felt odd and out of place. The beds were comfortable, though my friend’s had slats that were the wrong size. Staff first said they’d fixed it without doing anything, but eventually replaced them. The shower was warm and easy to use. There was a hole in the bathroom door, but it wasn’t a big issue. The insulation kept the room too warm at night. Opening the window wide wasn’t a great option either, since ladybirds and shield bugs from the surrounding fields could get inside after harvest. When we returned from a day trip, it looked like the cleaners had opened a window and sprayed the bugs. Most of the 33 we found were half dead. They weren’t much trouble, and we mostly laughed about it. The morning view of the fog-covered Vosges was astounding, though we couldn’t go out onto the balcony. We weren’t allowed to use the pool, but it looked lovely in the other photos I’ve seen. There isn’t much to do in the quiet village of Klingenthal. Colmar, Freiburg, Strasbourg and Lake Titisee are all a little over an hour away by car, though. A nice hotel, and I enjoyed my stay.

The food was a pleasure, especially the desserts and ice cream. I had a comfortable, pleasant stay and would be glad to come back. The hotel was very clean, the location was excellent, and the reception felt both warm and professional. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality.

After a tiring long journey, our first meeting at the hotel wasn’t great. We complained, though, and the issue was settled very satisfactorily. They gave us a beautiful room on the third floor and a private dining arrangement, and the staff were lovely. Hotel des Vogels is a very large hotel in Alsace, one of my favourite parts of France. It now caters for ‘Enjoy hotels’, a formula that may need a bit more investigation. The hotel is run by two sisters, one at reception and one a chef, and their brother, who was on holiday. They’re charming people, and thanks to this family we had a great stay in a beautiful spot.

The staff were so helpful and made sure we had a great stay. It’s a lovely hotel in a beautiful location.
