I loved how the Mercure hotel is built around a writers’ theme. Each room has an author’s name, with a short biography inside. The bedspreads were wonderfully soft, almost like feathers, and after a long busy day it felt like sleeping on clouds. The hotel is surrounded by trees, so it feels like being in a forest. There’s a beautiful garden with a rotunda to sit in, and a swimming pool that’s perfect for cooling off in mid-August. You can float until evening or sit by the pool with a drink from the restaurant. The hotel is cozy, and the staff are extremely kind and attentive. It was one of my favorites.
The staff were surprisingly unwelcoming and aloof. They were helpful, though, which is worth mentioning.
The tram stop is right by the hotel, and a shopping centre is only a few stops away. This was my second stay, and it remains my preferred hotel. The staff were lovely, especially the young woman at reception and the gentleman, who were both really helpful. They cleaned our room daily and brought extra towels when I asked, which helped with my two children. The cot wasn't properly set up when we arrived, but they sorted it straight away. Breakfast had plenty of choice, including fresh orange juice, and the staff kept replenishing everything. I wasn't keen on the soggy eggs, and the juicer sometimes didn't work properly or was broken. Even so, the staff were courteous and the breakfast was the best.
The cleanliness left a lot to be desired, and the air conditioning was controlled by a Siemens Enterprise thermostat that limits the temperature to save energy. The bigger problem was the lifts. The main elevator was out when we arrived, so we had to use the service elevator, which had also stopped working by the next day. Getting luggage up and down from the sixth floor was a real struggle, and I saw families with young children having trouble too. It felt disrespectful of management, as if routine elevator maintenance hadn't been done on time. Our stay was very disappointing.
The pool and garden were a real bonus, and our kids loved spending time there. We got in very late because our flight was delayed, but Thomas on the night shift was welcoming and friendly even in the middle of the night. The staff were good overall. The rooms feel a little old, though the beds are comfortable. The air conditioning wasn't working very well, but it was just cold enough. Nice hotel, and we'll be back!
