I loved the story behind this innovative museum, which came out of a competition around 2010. The place explains wine production, service and the industry in great detail, and there’s fun for all ages. I’d never heard of aroma generator technology before, but you can smell all kinds of scents from wine, cognac, liquors and champagne. The ticket also includes two samples on the 8th floor, where the views are spectacular. The restaurant food is excellent, with vegetarian, meat and seafood options, and the desserts are amazing!

The tasting room upstairs is worth saving time for, especially for the amazing view over the Garonne. La Cité du Vin is much more than a museum: its interactive displays bring wine’s history and culture to life, with tasting experiences woven in. I could have spent hours there and still found something new. The building’s flowing glass curves are beautiful too. A brilliant, modern celebration of wine.

The top floor tasting is a highlight, both for the wine and the views. The building itself is impressive, and the exhibition makes wine from Bordeaux and around the world interesting through informative, fun, interactive displays. Definitely worth visiting while in Bordeaux.

We ended up spending more than three hours here, and it was time well spent. I expected another ordinary exhibition, but the quality and interactive parts were magnificent. It looks at wines from around the world and gives you an educational, fascinating view of the craft and magic of making wine. A great way to spend a rainy day in Bordeaux.

Set aside about two hours to wander through this big, multi-level museum. There’s a lot to see, touch, and try across the exhibits. Upstairs, the spacious wine tasting room comes with views over Bordeaux. A really enjoyable visit.
