Hôtel Alexandra

We had a very comfortable bed and a breakfast buffet with plenty to choose from. It’s a great base for seeing the city on foot, and getting in at any hour of the night was easy. We enjoyed our stay and will certainly come back.

We were just passing through on our way to the ferry port in Calais, so stayed for one night. It’s a simple, charming hotel. The room was small, but had tea and coffee facilities, and a decent-sized bathroom with a separate toilet. Street parking nearby is free after 6pm. We skipped breakfast, so can’t comment on it.

The host was very friendly, and for what we paid, Hotel Alexandra was a good stop on our road trip through France. Our room was clean and roomy enough. The bathroom was fine, though the toilet was a bit cramped beside the shower enclosure. We didn’t try breakfast, so I can’t say how it was. One tip, park before the bridge to avoid the parking cost. The city center is also nice to visit on a weekend, with a few small bars where you can have a drink. The language can be a challenge: the hotel host speaks English, but people in the restaurants speak only French.

The noise made for a bad night, and the host never replied when I contacted him about it. Drunk guests were singing, swearing, banging on the wall, and there were crying babies. The rooms are poorly insulated, and there’s no night reception to ask anyone to quiet down. The room itself was clean but tiny and quite gloomy, and reception was okay. I paid 80 on Airbnb, although other sites listed it at 55. That may explain why Airbnb calls it Familiale while the hotel’s real name is hotel Alexandra. For 80 eu, it wasn’t worth it.
