Hotel du Chateau

Service was the standout. The young woman at reception went out of her way to help, and the hotel is right in the centre with great velo facilities. The room was a bit tired and basic, but it was clean and quiet.

The hotel’s handy for visiting different places around Caen, with tram and bus stops nearby and a comfortable 15 minute walk from the train station. My late check-in was easy, using a code for the front door and a lockbox on the reception desk for my room key. Everything worked perfectly. The staff are friendly, helpful, and polite, and the room was cleaned to a good standard. There isn't much space, though, and the heat was a real problem. I turned off all the radiators, but each time I came back the room was still much hotter than the hallway and especially the outdoors. It was 23°C outside, but the room felt over 30. I couldn't sleep with the duvet on and had to take it off.

The location was great, and we parked in the open "plaza" just behind the Hotel. Breakfast was the usual French/continental sort, nothing special, but it saved us time. The room didn't quite match the pictures from booking, and when anyone used water on the floors above us, the plumbing roared like Niagara Falls.

The location was good, and the staff were friendly, but our first night was awful. They put us in room 24, on the bottom floor by the elevator, front desk, and entrance. It was so noisy that I didn't get to sleep until after 5am. The room was outdated, the mattress felt super cheap, and the shower was small and needed remodeling. They moved us to a large family room on the 4th floor, and that was much better: quieter, cleaner, with a good bed and a bigger, modern bathroom. I just wish they'd never put us in that crappy room to start with. It was a Wednesday night, so I doubt it was the only room left.
