4/10
There was a power cut from about 5 pm until 10 pm, then another one at 5 pm the next evening, apparently planned. Guests weren’t given much help during the outages, not even temporary lights or a free drink. The room itself was very dark, with poor lighting and no useful storage; space that could have held a shelf or hooks was wasted. There was nowhere to hang a towel in the bathroom, and the faulty light I reported on arrival never got fixed. It was too dark to read. The plastic sheet on the bed made it horribly hot and sweaty, something I hadn’t dealt with for years. Breakfast was adequate, but nothing to rave about.

The staff were excellent, and I liked the location. The hotel itself is nice, but the rooms felt a bit small for a Mercure. Breakfast was a real letdown, with a very limited spread rather than a full selection. There’s good underground parking shared by the Ibis and Mercure.

You can walk to both abbeys, Caen castle, restaurants, bars, and even a supermarket from this perfectly placed hotel. The lobby feels modern and pleasant. Everyone I dealt with, from reception to breakfast and housekeeping, was friendly and professional. The front desk staff were especially polite, spoke excellent English, and made a great impression. I can only recommend it.

10/10
The rooms are spacious and the hotel is comfortable, though some paintwork in the rooms needs attention. Parking is the awkward part: it’s mostly paid and can be difficult to find. From Saturday night into Sunday, parking on the streets is forbidden because of the weekly Sunday market.

From the city centre location, it’s easy to find plenty of places to eat. The hotel faces the canal, and a canal-facing room has a pretty view. The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, and the hotel was very clean. Breakfast was wonderful.
