La Demeure de la Cit

La Demeure du Cassoulet gave us an unforgettable meal. The gourmet cassoulet with foie gras was rich, comforting and truly traditional. Happy Guide France recommends it if you want to experience real French cuisine in Carcassonne.

Trying traditional Cassoulet for the first time was a memorable experience. It’s a rich stew from southern France, made with haricot beans, sausage, pork, mutton and preserved goose, with fragrant garlic and herbs.

The cassoulet is award-winning for a reason, and the duck breast was delicious and beautifully presented too. I also got to try lemonade made locally. The atmosphere was lovely, with someone playing guitar outside. We were seated indoors, but the floor-to-ceiling windows opened to let in a breeze. Cassoulet is a heavy dish, so it was kind of them to give us a takeaway container to enjoy the rest another day.

We went for the tuna steak with pistachio cream sauce, which was different and excellent, and the fillet steak rossini was cooked well too. Everything on both plates tasted good. We shared a chocolate fondant and it was perfect. The restaurant costs a little more than most places in the cité medievale, but we thought the nice-looking venue and good reviews made it worth trying. They did. We sat outside as the sun went down, with little garden and patio lights creating a romantic feel. Our waitress was very friendly and made an effort to chat. A great choice if you want something a bit special.
