The quiet, green surroundings around the lock keeper's house make this a pleasant pause on a boat trip along the Canal du Midi, a few kilometers from Castelnaudary. At the Planque lock, you can watch a simple process that takes about ten minutes: the boat enters the chamber, the gates close, and the lock keeper uses the sluice gates to raise or lower the water until it matches the level on the other side. It's a typical example of the ingenuity behind this UNESCO World Heritage canal, and there's time to enjoy the peaceful setting while the boat moves through.
