We won’t be coming back, though by the end we were mostly laughing at how absurd the evening had become. We booked dinner for our wedding anniversary at 7:30 pm, then stood in silence for almost two minutes before anyone greeted us. My husband had to find the waitress, who then showed us to a table. The restaurant looked and smelled old-fashioned. We waited for a menu that never came. There was a paper listing aperitifs and wines at pretty high prices, and a large chalkboard with two set menus but no explanation of the starters, mains, or desserts. In the end, the waitress said the advertised set-menu prices didn’t apply because everything was à la carte. Confusing, but we tried to carry on. My husband asked for a glass of beer and was told they only served it by the bottle, so we ordered two kirs with a handful of peanuts. The napkins were neatly rolled, but mine had mold stains in the folds, and there was a brownish stain at the bottom of my wine glass. We weren’t offered any sides with our dishes, and my husband had to ask about them. The Uncle Ben's rice was tasteless, with no butter, salt, or herbs, and the zucchini was swimming in oil. The ribeye steak was good. The bread they brought was stale. Nobody offered water, either a carafe or a bottle. Our bottle of wine tasted good, but cost half as much as the meal. They served the white wine in a bucket without fresh water or ice to keep it cold. Cheese was on the menu, but there wasn’t any. The restaurant was almost silent, so my husband asked if they could put on background music, since the tables were close together in the cramped room and he didn’t want to disturb other diners. We were told the system no longer worked because storms had knocked out the power several times over the past year and damaged the equipment. Our neighbors ordered a warm goat cheese salad around 8:30 pm and were told it was gone, even though there were only about ten of us. Instead of a “gourmet coffee,” we got coffee with a spoonful of whipped cream, industrial crème brûlée, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and orange blossom cream. There was no explanation of what the “gourmet coffee” included. We left with an exorbitant bill, and the restaurant doesn’t accept restaurant vouchers. We had a good laugh about the whole ridiculous situation, but we’re not returning.
