The fire happened in either 1994 or 1996. Mrs. Fourri, who lived on the ground floor, died in it, and the outdated electrical system was unfortunately fatal to her. Upstairs, Marcel and his wife Jeanine were trapped. He fell from a window and somehow survived with a broken leg and bruises on his back and arms. Firefighters from Chateaubourg and nearby rescued Jeanine without physical injuries, though she was badly shaken by her husband's incredible reaction, which had saved her life. I knew the manor, apparently now classified as a Château, from when my parents were friends with the tenants. They lived there for free in return for looking after the Château and Mr. and Mrs. Fourri's large vegetable garden. Between 1968 and 1985, the building was in a sorry state, with no running water and very old electricity.
