Le Relais De Clavières

The room was spacious and clean, though cold, and the restaurant had a nice view. The managers were friendly, but we felt hurried through the whole stay. We had booked that day and arrived around 7:30 PM. Before we’d even reached our room, we were asked to dine there. We agreed, then had to pick our dishes while still carrying our things and return in 20 minutes because they wanted to finish early during the busy season. Four other guests were already eating. It left us feeling rushed from the start. The meal was basic and a bit pricey. As soon as dessert arrived, they asked whether we wanted breakfast the next morning. We weren’t sure yet, but had to decide quickly, so we declined. At 9:45 PM the music stopped, and we were told rather ominously to leave. We thought a 10 AM checkout was too early, so we appreciated being allowed, as an exception, to leave around 11 instead. Holidays are for taking your time, and we weren’t asking for anything unreasonable.

The place was quiet and lovely, but that was about the only good part. We’d booked through Booking.com after seeing that pets were allowed, and arrived at 8:30 PM for a short stay. When we handed back the keys, they charged €10 for our little dog. The woman said the fee was listed on the website, but I don’t believe that was true. I wouldn’t have paid at that price. It felt ridiculous, especially since she doesn’t use the electricity or water. We stay in hotels and campsites often and have never paid that much, or anything at all. The room was really depressing too: no Wi-Fi, TV, or heating, even though it was cold. There was nowhere to put toiletries, and the bathroom had no electrical outlet.

We stumbled on the place and booked at the last minute, so the warm, professional welcome was a lovely surprise. It’s tucked into nature, with a stunning view, and the rooms are spacious, very clean, and have mezzanines. The furniture and decor are simple but practical, and the bed was comfortable. There’s no TV, which made it easy to switch off. We had a really good time. The restaurant serves simple, tasty, generous portions. We ordered the Relais salad with tomatoes, jambon dauvergne, bleu d'Auvergne, and walnuts, plus fries, tarte tatin, and a chocolate fondant. Very good value for money. Just remember to bring a hairdryer and shower or hair gel, as those aren’t provided.

The breakfast was superb, and our room was clean. The staff were excellent and very helpful, and we got a really warm welcome.
