This was one of the most unusual and wonderful places I’ve stayed. The 12th-century building feels rustic and medieval, but still has modern comforts. You can walk to everything you’d want to see in Cluny in a short time. The host was warm and friendly, and I’d happily stay again.

The host gave us a warm welcome and put out a lovely breakfast basket. We were right in the medieval heart of Cluny, in an early 12th-century townhouse from the town’s heyday. It’s one of Europe’s oldest houses where you can stay comfortably, and it has been beautifully renovated and well equipped. The decor mixes medieval European, Asian, and more modern styles. There are also plenty of books and magazines in French, English, and German.

We spent two nights at Maison Romane in late December 2017 for our honeymoon. On arrival the host welcomed us warmly in English and offered a free upgrade to their best room. It was spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. The French-style breakfast was perfect. This gorgeous, historically significant place felt completely unique, by far our most unusual accommodation experience in the best sense. Highly recommended!

We stopped here on our way to the Loira Valley and were so glad we did. The historic house was charming, with lovely views of Cluny's masterpieces. Our bedroom was comfortable, immaculate, and wonderful. Breakfast was perfect, and the friendly owners did everything to make us feel at home. They deserve all five stars. Elizabeth, a true Cluny native, has created a gem of a place to unwind. The medieval interior is decorated with an international, exotic flair, a triumph. Cluny is memorable for both its past and present, and we’ve already been and will be back. There’s even a parking space right by the house, a real bonus in town. Bravo!
