It can get pretty crowded, so it’s worth planning ahead. We left the car at Parking Rapp, which made things easy, and walked into the area without much trouble. If you have time, Marché Couvert de Colmar is worth a visit, and a little boat tour gives you another view of the houses. The best part for me was taking it slowly. Wandering the small streets past colorful storybook-looking houses, little shops, and cozy places to stop felt really relaxing. There are riverside restaurants where you can sit outside, have a meal and a glass of wine, and watch the water and people go by. It makes for a lovely, unhurried few hours in this beautiful, charming neighborhood.

A boat ride, some traditional Alsatian food, or just a walk by the water all make for a memorable, romantic visit. The narrow streets have inviting cafés and lovely views around each corner, while the half-timbered houses, canals, and flower-filled balconies give the place a fairytale feel. You can see French and Alsatian influences in the architecture, food, and local hospitality. La Petite Venise is one of France’s most charming places, and a must-see when you’re traveling here.

It’s a lovely place to walk, take a break, and get a feel for Colmar. The riverbank is lively, with couples having a quiet drink, solo visitors enjoying the view, and local families out with their children and dogs. Little boutiques and cozy restaurants line both sides of the river. The water is calm and clear, reflecting the colorful houses, and small boats pass now and then. This stretch is actually much shorter than you might expect, which is the main drawback. Still, La Petite Venise brings so much charm and life to the town.

It can feel a little touristy, but the setting makes it worth stopping for a meal while exploring this picturesque part of Alsace. We had good, regional food, especially the local specialties. The Flammekueche was fresh and tasty, simple as it was, and the service was fine. La Petite Venise sits right beside the canals, surrounded by colorful old houses. It’s a beautiful place and has a really special, almost postcard-like atmosphere.

Little Venice is lovely in every season, though the flowers make it especially magical in spring and summer. The cobbled streets, charming bridges, and flower-lined canals make for a storybook scene. You can take a boat along the Lauch River to admire the historic buildings, then stop at a riverside café or shop. It’s an especially nice area to stroll, take photos, or eat on a waterside terrace, and a real highlight of Alsace.
