The peaceful night’s sleep in a very comfortable bed surprised me, since the hotel was much busier at breakfast than I’d expected. It seems to attract quiet, nice guests. This is an old-fashioned hotel in the best sense, with a family-run feel and genuinely welcoming staff. Even the keys are proper keys, not plastic cards. It overlooks Combourg’s lake, the public areas are fine, and I stretched my nightcap in the bar into a very long one.

We didn’t stay overnight, but enjoyed sitting in the sunshine in the early evening with a coffee.

The food was perfect, which made the state of the rooms all the more disappointing. We were given one room where the window blinds wouldn’t close, then moved to another with a missing shower door, an ill-fitting curtain, and mould on the shower and ceiling. We stayed here 20 years ago, and the rooms we got looked like they hadn’t been redecorated since. Sadly, we won’t be back.

Breakfast came with our room and had plenty of tasty choices. The room was very clean, with enough room to move around, though it was a little small. The hotel is beautifully situated beside the lake, just as its name suggests.

We came to France to visit a friend and spent three nights here. The rooms were clean and a good size, with lovely views of either the castle or the lake. Staff were really friendly, and the food, including at the restaurant, was delicious. Five stars from me, and we’ll definitely come again.
