For over 20 years, I’ve been a happy regular at B&B Coquelles, mainly because of the location, the ground-floor rooms with walk-in showers and extra space, and the friendly staff. Those rooms have been especially useful now that my wife has medical problems, and when we travel with our dogs. I usually book direct, expecting that to help the franchisee with costs and make it easier to meet our needs. This time, though, I was told my usual reservation, made two weeks earlier alongside our outward trip to the UK, had been moved upstairs to make room for a group staying several days. They had all been given ground-floor rooms. Someone suggested I try hotels in Calais, but wouldn’t check whether that was an option. Coquelles is always my first choice, and if there had been a genuine reason they couldn’t honor my booking, I’d have cancelled and found somewhere else in Coquelles. When I objected, the woman defended what she’d done aggressively and said that anyone with mobility problems should book a hotel with a lift. That was inexcusable. I only just stopped myself from slapping her. It was a serious mistake, handled very badly. Please don’t let it happen again. B&B Coquelles is still my preferred hotel when I use Eurotunnel.
The location was handy for the Eurotunnel, and the price was very good. Our room was small but clean, with a comfortable bed, even if it squeaked a little. We slept well. Breakfast was really good, with a nice selection. The woman checking us in was lovely, and the man in the morning was very welcoming and showed us what was available. I’d definitely stay again.
The location is the one good thing, really close to the eurotuy. Getting into the hotel was difficult because nobody sent us the gate codes before we arrived. Soundproofing was terrible too, we could hear everyone walking past our room. The shower room was filthy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned. I wouldn’t recommend staying here at all.
We stayed one night on 22 August. The room was clean and comfortable, though the hotel itself felt a little run down, and breakfast was just about adequate. But we wouldn’t book here again because the place isn’t secure. We were given a code for the hotel entrance, yet other people could simply walk in. That’s how the bike on the back of my husband’s car was stolen. It had a very secure steel lock that needed bolt cutters to get through. We reported it to the police in Calais after the manager, who was sympathetic, gave us the address. It’s a dreadful way to begin a holiday, and the theft has left us dealing with an insurance claim instead of relaxing. B&B Hotels later contacted us with what felt like a pathetic excuse: there’s an opening beside the main gate for pedestrians and emergency services, which confirms that anyone can walk in. An ambulance or fire engine would have to use the main gate anyway. We’ve been coming to France for more than 25 years and never had this happen at Ibis or Holiday Inn. The response from Hotel B&B was appalling. They say the car park is secure, but it definitely isn’t. With migrants prevalent in Calais, you’d think B&B would tighten up security.
The only real downside was the very hard bed. Otherwise, it was a really nice place: clean and tidy, good service and breakfast, plenty of parking and good facilities. There are also great places to eat nearby. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re laid out well and kept clean.
