We booked the gîte months ahead while hiking the Mare a Mare trail. The hostess called to say they’d be away and emailed all the access information. She was pleasant and accommodating, and even left a quick meal for us in the fridge before she went. Still, we were very disappointed by the gîte when we arrived. It could be lovely with some character in the furnishings, but it no longer looks like the online photos. Instead of the decorative paneling shown, there were cheap sheets stretched and stapled under the tiles as a ceiling. We had to clear cobwebs from everywhere and rewash all the sticky dishes. I wonder if the place had been closed for a while. The crêperie was closed too, and the hosts weren’t there.

We’d booked cave accommodation ahead of time, but it turned out to be a very small cellar under the house. There was only one candle for light, and no matches. The breakfast was meager and not worth what it cost. The only place to wash was a hand basin in the outdoor toilet, with cold water. The crêperie was closed.

We only stayed one night, but it was a delightful, refreshing visit. The hosts were very kind, and their crêpes, made with quality Corsican ingredients, were delicious. Thanks for the warm welcome. We’ll definitely come back.

For our last night in Corsica, my boyfriend surprised me with a stay in a shepherd’s cave. We arrived around 10 pm, but they still made us a meal using natural, healthy produce from the garden. What a welcome. The garden is a lovely place to relax and watch the stars and moon rise behind the majestic mountain. In the morning we visited the eco-museum, where old work and household tools make it feel like a trip back in time. There’s also a tiny, quaint village nearby with only 80 inhabitants. It was magical, and I’ll definitely return for at least two or three days. ❤️
