A La Poularde

The welcome from the owner and her sweet, spontaneous daughters made us feel at home right away. She was especially taken with our dogs, and for a friendly price we got to sleep in rooms that feel like stepping back in time. They’re old, but warm and charming, with excellent beds and modern, excellent bathrooms. We rested well in the dark, unlit surroundings. Getting there is part of the experience: it feels like cycling a rural Tour du France stage, past rolling countryside, woods, vineyards, cornfields, and churches glowing among the greenery. A la Poularde itself looks like a battered farm from an artsy French cult film, its worn beams and crooked roof tiles full of history and hard work. There are overgrown bicycles, old finds from the barn, haylofts, and farm ducks keeping an eye on things. Cows mooed to each other, chickens and chicks wandered around, and plump geese followed us as we explored. The goats were curious too, peering in through windows and from up on the walls like little kids watching visitors. After a good breakfast at the right time and a relaxed dog walk through the quiet landscape, we were ready to carry on.
