Best Western Plus Hotel Cargo

We were cycling toward Belgium, and this place did what we needed. The room was solid and breakfast was good for 15 euros, with plenty of carbs for the long ride ahead. We hardly saw any staff. We hadn't realized the ferry arrived eight miles out of town, so getting there at 1am was a stretch, though that's not the venue's fault.

The shower was very good, the Wi-Fi worked well, and the late bar hours came in useful since there didn't seem to be many bars in the centre and they closed fairly early. A 12:00 checkout also suited our 13:00 train much better than the usual 11:00 one. The room itself was okay but a bit small. There was no fridge, and the can of water wasn't replaced each day. One day the room wasn't cleaned, and reception seemed stumped when I mentioned it. They didn't offer any fix, not even fresh towels. The safe was bulky, easy to pick up, and took up space where clothes could have gone. Breakfast was only okay, below what I've had at similar hotels. The hot food may have been fresh at opening, but by around 09:00, with breakfast ending at 10:00, the scrambled eggs had a thick crust I'd never seen before. On another day, two of the three hot dishes were empty and weren't replenished. A few other things, including croissants, seemed to run out too. The price felt high, even against the steep hotel price rises of the last 2-3 years. It's possible Best Western had brought in a "Net Revenue Management" system and pushed rates as far as they could during busier periods.

We had a great two-night stay as a couple. It's right at the start of the city centre, and the bathroom was clean. Our room looked like the pictures. The breakfast selection was quite small and didn't feel worth the price. The staff were nice. Everyone spoke French fluently, and some people also spoke English. We'd definitely come back :)

The location was convenient for places to eat and shops, and apparently there's a beach nearby too. We didn't get to see it, since most of our time was spent at the hospital. The rooms were really comfortable, with great beds, a nice design, and a quiet, clean feel. I think it was recently refurbished as the hotel changes from Welcome Hotel to Best Western, and they did a good job. We ended up staying 11 nights after my husband had a car accident on his way to Holland at the end of June and needed treatment at the nearby hospital. The staff kept adding nights as we needed them, and we never had to change rooms. Two people on staff especially helped us. One woman's name escapes me, though I think it started with A. She was so kind and gave my mother-in-law a huge hug when she checked out after 10 nights. The other was Lucy at reception. I hadn't expected to stay more than a few nights, so I didn't bring enough of my regular medication. We couldn't find a nearby doctor or pharmacy that understood what I needed because of the language barrier. Lucy took over, called lots of places, got it sorted, and arranged a taxi so we could pick up the medication. A few days later, she even offered to drive my mother-in-law to the police station after her shift. She had to deal with an emergency, so we didn't get to see her again to thank her properly. We left a card at reception instead. She was an absolute lifesaver, and I can't thank her enough! ❤️ Even with everything going on, it was a very pleasant stay, and I'd highly recommend it ☺️
