Auberge de la Rivière

Jessica and Julien made us feel very welcome. Julien cooked in the evenings, and over a couple of nights our friends and I tried nearly everything on the menu. The dishes were well prepared, generous, and very good, with local products used where possible. Jessica looked after breakfast, which was well worth getting up for. We chose the roullotte for the night, a kind of trailer that gave us the independence of a small apartment. We’re gradually exploring the French Jura, and this little hotel in Foncine-le-Haut was a lovely find. There’s plenty to see nearby and good hiking too. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend it.

The meal was a highlight. My wife’s fish was delicious, and my Nem was unusual and tasty, followed by an Angus steak that practically melted in my mouth. All at a very friendly price. Even with the restaurant full, the food came out in a reasonable time for a home-cooked meal, and our waitress served us with a smile. We were warmly welcomed at Auberge de la Riviere after a long drive. I’d spent quite a while looking for an affordable one-night stop on our way to Annemasse, since Swiss prices and some French ones were out of the question. The staff suggested things to see before nightfall, including a spectacular gorge in the next village. Our room didn’t face the small river beside it, though we could still see it. The water was loud outside, but the room shut out the sound and we slept well. Thanks to everyone for making the stop so enjoyable. It was worth the search. Andrew and Michelle

We had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch and it was great value. The location and restaurant are very nice, and a charming young couple have just taken over. The food was good, though it needed a little more to earn five stars.

The caravan was a lot of fun to sleep in, and the natural setting is lovely. Great location, with very kind, helpful staff and owner.
