La Maison de Maître

The morning breakfast was an elegant French spread. The place itself is amazing, and the husband-and-wife hosts were great.

Really top-notch.

The rooms felt spacious and were decorated with real taste, almost like a castle, and the whole place was magnificent and calm. We were a small group of women, one of whom uses a wheelchair, and the owners were so attentive and kind while we worked out a few adjustments. I’m very grateful for their understanding. We’d love to come back, and we’ll be thinking of our friend.

The breakfast was generous and good, and the house is charming in a beautiful setting and a good location. But the stay was frustrating. We booked every room hoping for peace and privacy, yet the hosts were constantly around. The toilet and bathroom aren’t connected to the bedrooms, and at 11 pm they came to tell us there was a toilet downstairs, which felt absurd when we were only trying to avoid disturbing other guests. It didn’t feel like a guesthouse where you could feel at home or have real privacy. There wasn’t even water offered when we arrived. We had to ask for a carafe. The hosts seemed to favor some guests, and wouldn’t switch on the outside light because it might disturb them. Being just 30 minutes past the allotted time brought a snide comment. We’d asked to stay until noon the next day so our baby could eat comfortably at the right time and enjoy the pool, and they kindly agreed. But the pool was covered and closed the next day. They also asked the caterer to take the rubbish away, which I’d never heard of. At breakfast, asking for two people to eat at 8 and two at 9 earned us a stern look. In the morning they didn’t greet us, but immediately asked, “Why are there three of you?” Two were there to eat as planned, while the third wanted to enjoy the outdoors and start tidying so the cleaner could begin promptly at 11. It’s a lovely place, but it seems you can enjoy it only if you stick strictly to the schedule, or you’ll be asked to pay extra, again something I’d never come across. I got the impression that making money to pay for the work mattered more than pleasing guests.
