Our evening meal was outstanding, proper gastronomic cooking. When the restaurant is open, it's a gem, and the chef's reputation is well deserved. The hotel itself is a great place to stay, though it's a steep walk up from Goumois village and its restaurants. Check that the hotel is serving: it was closed on the Wednesday we arrived, so we walked down to the village. That was fine, but the climb back right after eating was a bit of a struggle. There's ample parking, though it isn't guarded. The pool is nice but unheated. I used the excellent sauna and jacuzzi room twice without any problems. Our room 17 was on the second floor and had a gorgeous view across the Goumois valley. It was a Balneo room, so cost more, but had extra space and a large two-person spa bath with jets. If you won't use the bath, a simpler room is quite a bit cheaper. The gardens and terrace are pleasant for breakfast or an evening aperitif. We did the recommended La Goule hike, a five-hour round trip. The French-side path climbs quite a lot to get around a stone tower by the river. It's manageable with healthy knees and ankles and good footwear, but after rain the tree roots get slippery and can be treacherous. The Swiss side is safer, though rather boring and flat all the way back.

The room was spacious and very nice, and breakfast was excellent. It was quiet overnight, but border traffic brought lots of road noise in the evening and again from 5 a.m.

We spent a long weekend there in late September 22. The hosts were attentive and friendly, and the food at every meal was fresh and clearly focused on quality. Dinner menus were a pleasant surprise and very good. The rooms and facilities are a little old, but classy and well kept. The billiards area by the pool is fun to hang out in. The small spa smelled a bit, though it was otherwise fine, and you need to book a time in advance. Good value for the money, although drinks are a little pricey.

The room was comfortable, but the decor was awful. The bathroom was warm, the balcony ashtray was full of cigarette ends, and there were dead plants indoors. The pool was green and clearly hadn't been in use for a while. The menu offered little choice, service was slow, and prices were excessive. Breakfast was poor for what it cost. The next night we stayed at another Logis near Auxerre, and the difference was striking: excellent food, lots to choose from, and a comfortable, characterful room, all for two-thirds of the price.

The food was good, but very expensive, and the service left a lot to be desired. It's an old-fashioned, classy hotel up on a hill, with splendid views across the river to Switzerland.
