The Drôme may be one of the south of France's best-kept secrets, and this wonderful gite is in a great spot. The lovely couple who run it speak English, Dutch, French, and German, and couldn't be more welcoming.

This was our second stop here, five years after the first, on our way to Spain, and the idyllic setting was just as enjoyable. It was a lovely extra treat before our sunny Spanish holiday. We had two rooms for us and our daughters, who are 13 and 15, each with its own shower and toilet. On arrival we cooled off in the pool, and later our host had arranged a table at a very good pizzeria in a nearby village. There was no air conditioning, but even at 38°C the rooms stayed comfortable and we all slept well. We had a simple but delicious breakfast with a range of local products. It was served under a little parasol overlooking the valley, with crickets chirping nearby. The host and hostess deserve a solid 10, as do the incredibly sweet pets our girls adored. We missed Shepherd Max right away, but Shepherd Lou gladly took over the cuddling duties. We'll certainly stay a third time if we need a stop on our way to the South of France or North of Spain. The location is ideal for that.

The grounds and outside of the house are really charming, but inside it was disappointing. Dust, cobwebs, and a shower curtain in terrible condition made the cleanliness less than satisfactory, and the bedding wasn't great either. The owner came across as very cold and unpleasant, constantly hovering over the guests.

The cottages are lovely, well equipped, and set in beautiful grounds. We were disappointed that the pool wasn't heated, there was no Wi-Fi despite it being advertised, and the tennis courts were out of order. The owner seemed wary and tense, and uncomfortable with our large group, which made communication hard. Luckily, being together again made us happy, so it didn't spoil the stay.

It's a beautiful place, but I found the owner's manner really unpleasant. He kept hovering around the guests and made aggressive comments over trivial things. If you're after a peaceful, quiet stay, I'd look somewhere else.
