The apartment was fine, and I really liked the pool and garden. But being on the second floor, up 50 steps, wasn’t ideal with three children. The owners were also very strict about some of their rules and more present than we liked.

Alain and Caroline are pleasant, welcoming hosts, and the town center is close enough to walk to the market. The Vologne River runs through the backyard, which is lovely to stroll around. Our top-floor apartment was spacious, maybe more than we needed, since a smaller one would have been fine. Having a pool for tenants made it easy to relax each day. It’s a characterful building, with a few creaks and squeaks here and there. All in all, a great place for a summer holiday.

For a peaceful family break, this place has a large park, garden furniture, deckchairs and a barbecue, with a small stream at the back. There’s also an indoor pool, and Gérardmer is only a 10-minute drive away. The owners are genuinely welcoming and attentive, and they share suggestions for visits and local attractions. Thanks again to Caroline and Alain for the stay.

I didn’t stay at the castle. The cottage I rented was the yellow one with blue shutters, and it was dirty: the floor hadn’t been washed, there were cobwebs, the water heater was rusty, the electrical wiring was faulty, and there was no heating when I arrived. Very disappointing.
