The gardens are steep, with a small swimming pool lower down, and could be unsafe for toddlers. The house is also surprisingly hard to spot. Your SatNav may get you there, but from the road it looks so tiny you might not realize it’s a guesthouse. It’s a fantastic place overlooking Grasse, about a 10-minute walk from the main Street. The host was lovely and spoke fluent English and Spanish, and presumably French too. The Rothschild family owned it originally, and most of the gardens date from their time. It’s a Bed & Breakfast only because French bureaucracy makes serving food too difficult.

The setting is beautiful, the welcome was very warm and breakfast was excellent. Still, after reading some online reviews, I can see the same issue others mentioned: the cleaning needs closer attention and a more thorough job, especially at these high-end rates. For 120 euros a night, finding hair and fur left by previous guests is unacceptable. I wish I’d checked the reviews before booking.

The view was the one real highlight. The room had no television, and the host was nowhere to be seen. Cleanliness left something to be desired, and the bedding was only average, though breakfast was very good. For the level of service, the price felt quite high.
