La Chancellerie

The dining room, pool, and grounds worked really well for our family group of 15, including six grandchildren. We were there for our nephew's wedding, and the owners made everything easy from the moment they welcomed us. The rooms are lovely and we soon felt at home. You do need to respect the owners' house rules, though, and when you do, everything goes smoothly. We were delighted with the welcome, location, and amenities.

The hosts were so accommodating, helping us with car trouble and with my difficulty using stairs. When we arrived late, they even opened their private dining room so we could have a lovely dinner, and we had breakfast there too. The garden is lovely, breakfast was good, and the local wines were reasonably priced. A calm, charming chambre d'hôte I'll remember. I'd recommend it. Judy Shergold

We left a night early after four nights. We had paid over €160 a night for five nights for the two of us and our dog, more than €800 in total. This was meant to be our holiday treat, and it really wasn't. We didn't expect the Ritz, but we did expect better, and I wish more people had been honest in their reviews so we wouldn't have booked. I've thought hard about writing this. Some people simply aren't suited to hospitality. My advice is to avoid it. The cottage had a damp, musty smell throughout, and everything in it smelled old. We had to keep the windows open. There were cobwebs everywhere, as if it hadn't been used for months or hadn't been properly cleaned in a long time. I once bent down to turn on a lamp and put my face right into a web. It should have been cleaned properly before we arrived. I can only assume the owners, who live there, had become nose-blind to the smell. The facilities and appliances were mostly old, and some didn't work. There was an ironing board but no iron, and it felt like the owners had left their old broken things here. We got no manual, just the WiFi instructions. Our bedroom also had a connecting door to another guest room. There was a wardrobe in front of it, but we could hear the other guests yawning and every word of their conversations. There wasn't much of a welcome, and certainly no sense that nothing would be too much trouble. We were simply given a list of things not to do. We didn't complain about the cottage during our stay.

Car trouble meant we got there later than planned, but the host was incredibly accommodating. They made us a light dinner and helped us negotiate the return of our car. The house and grounds are wonderful.
