If a quiet break is what you're after, this is an ideal spot, with a breathtaking sunset right in front of you. There's a sheltered terrace for eating outside and a private entrance opening onto a large courtyard just for you. The owner was thoughtful and attentive while still giving us space, and the ground-floor setup had all the comforts of home, just right for two. We had a spacious bedroom with excellent bedding, a well-equipped kitchen, a stylish, comfortable living room, a separate toilet, and a shower room.

Dogs are welcome, and there's an enclosed garden where pets can roam and you can park your car. There are lovely walks nearby, too. We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at the Landhuismes gîte, which is very comfortable and has excellent internet. The owner is lovely. It would suit a family of four or five, or two couples, with two bedrooms, two toilets, and two bathrooms. The ground-floor bedroom is very spacious and works well for someone with reduced mobility, though there's a small step.

We had some lovely encounters with the residents of Huismes, and the landlady was just as friendly and attentive. It made for a wonderful, hassle-free holiday. We spent two very pleasant, relaxing weeks in an apartment with everything we needed. The area is great for hiking, shopping, and eating out, and of course there are sights like the Loire River and the castles.

The countryside was wonderfully quiet. Most of what we heard was frogs, hens, and tits. Huismes is surrounded by Loire Valley castles and troglodyte dwellings, with the homes of Balzac and Rabelais nearby, plus contemporary art in Montsoreau and Candes. Pure bliss, really. We stayed in a comfortable house with everything we needed on both floors. The owner was attentive without being intrusive, and a very good Scrabble opponent.
