The comments had made me a little uneasy before we arrived, but there was no need. This was nowhere near the worst place I stayed on my hike, and in a lot of ways it was one of the best. It’s a simple hotel, so I’m judging it with that in mind. The staff were friendly and happy to chat. Our room was clean and roomy enough, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was hot with good pressure. Breakfast had more choice than anywhere else we stayed on this trip. Dinner was a generous, tasty lasagna with a big salad, followed by a well put together cheese course; every cheese was ripe and ready to eat. I work with food and cook seriously at home, and the meal didn’t seem poorly made or industrial. I also checked the beds for bedbugs and found no sign of them.

Of the gites we stayed in along the Stephenson trail, this one stood out. They were all around the same price, but this was easily the best value. The rooms were warm, the service was really good, and they even made sure our vegetarian diet was covered. The vegetarian meal was the nicest I had anywhere on the trail. Thanks for a lovely stay, Stephanie and team!

The room and bathroom were clean, and the mattress was good, with soft blankets and clean sheets. There was also a basic lounge downstairs with a TV. But the room itself was very plain, and the bathroom felt old and worn out. There was no TV in the room, and we had to open the windows because it smelled musty. After a long, wet walk on the Stevenson, arriving at La Grand Halte was disappointing. The heater didn’t come on until after 8 pm. With everything dark and locked downstairs, I had to call the hotel number and ask someone to turn it on at the central boiler. We’d had a late lunch on arrival, but the €19 meal was poor value and almost inedible, so we skipped dinner. At €62 for two people in one room, I wouldn’t recommend the place. It needs some work, along with a new chef and staff on site.

The place was friendly, clean and quiet, with good food at reasonable prices.

The rooms are basic but clean, and the food is nice.
