Camping les Vernières

The toilet and shower block was the highlight, so clean that the person looking after it deserves a medal. The pool is heated and covered, and the pitches are a good size, with hedges around many of them. It's a 12-minute walk to the village centre and its several restaurants. What a find. We strongly recommend it.

The shower was new and clean, but frustrating to use: the light switched off after about 30 seconds, so I had to step out of the water to turn it on again. By then, the water had stopped because the button timer had run out. They need to extend the timings and add a hand dryer in the toilet. Otherwise, it was a great site. We visited in our motorhome in May, when it was very quiet and some pitches were a little muddy. Only a few pitches were open. The pool was warm and close to town, and the showers and toilets were clean, though there were no hand towels or air blowers for drying hands.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the site was kept tidy. We paid 85 euros for three nights, Tuesday to Friday, in a tent for two people during very high season, with electricity included. Facilities were extremely clean, though at busy times we sometimes had to wait for the showers or toilets, and there wasn't enough room for us to relax around the pool. I imagine that wouldn't be an issue outside peak season. Our pitch was nearer the road, so we heard some traffic at night. On Thursday, loud music from the bar carried across the whole site until around 11:30pm. We'd come back, but at a quieter time.

We enjoyed exploring the area, though with our low fitness levels and all the mountains, we only cycled short distances. The site is large, with a range of accommodation, and was reasonably quiet. Our large pitch with electricity was lovely, but the cable wouldn't reach the box, which was too far away, so we had to move. The replacement pitch was okay apart from a mole that kept surfacing beneath the tent, luckily under the groundsheet, so it never got inside. It knocked over quite a few things and left several risky holes underfoot. We used the toilets and showers, and there's also a bar.
