Le Château de la Caloterie

The grounds felt neglected, with long grass all around, no parasols, and garden furniture in such poor shape that some chairs seemed ready to break. The dovecote was abandoned, with no pigeons left. Inside, the bedrooms were adequate, but cleanliness elsewhere was lacking, the equipment was outdated, the barbecue was dirty with embers still glowing, and we had to fix the faulty fireplace ourselves. We were disappointed overall, since the gîte fell well short of what we expected for the price and left us feeling ripped off. The value for money is very poor. For that amount, the property should be much better maintained. We don’t recommend this gîte.

Just what we love: the charm and character of an authentic castle. It had to leave its agricultural purpose behind, but its connection to tradition has stayed intact and is well preserved.

The peaceful setting felt like a faraway place, and a path through the grounds led to the fortifications of Montreuil. They were magnificent on such a mild weekend. The property lived up to our expectations, with spacious rooms that could comfortably sleep up to 15 people. We also liked the fireplace, a closed hearth that worked well for a living room of that size. The bedrooms were large and comfortable too.

Such a beautiful castle 🫶, charmingly set in the peaceful countryside near Montreuil-sur-Mer.
