We came to Les Rethaises for a long-awaited holiday, hoping to relax, but the house faces a road that crosses the island, with a bus stop right there and traffic going by constantly. The owner pointed out that there’s double glazing, but that didn’t change how misleading it felt when an outdoor jacuzzi was one of the reasons we booked a €1,200-a-week stay. The road should have been mentioned in the listing. It isn’t the tenant’s job to investigate from afar whether a landlord has been honest. Last night’s arrival was a real shock. The owner is away and left the very friendly caretaker to deal with the disagreement. In the one rather rare message she sent, the owner said there was nothing misleading in the ad. It may not be an outright lie, but it is misleading, badly so, and that matters under the rules for seasonal rentals. There were other problems too: no inventory was completed, though a €1,500 deposit cheque was taken; a radiator looked ready to fall over; the door to an interior terrace wouldn’t shut; and the TV didn’t work. We asked from the start to discuss things constructively and find an amicable solution. Sadly, the owner’s attitude makes us think that won’t happen this week. If sharing this helps someone else, though, I’ll be glad.
