We enjoyed staying here last year, in 2014, so much that we booked another visit. Now the Municipality has closed it, and our holiday is off.
The location between a muddy beach and a highway makes the car noise hard to escape, and you'll need a car or bike to explore the island. A lot of guests seemed content to stay at the spa/hammam or in the TV room. That kind of holiday isn't for me. The site may have amenities nearby, but the campsite itself has plenty of problems. It feels like rentals get all the attention while open pitches are left to deteriorate. Ours was overgrown, sloped, exposed to the weather, and right beside the children's activities. The toilet block seemed ancient and was only cleaned now and then. A supposed mixer tap problem meant we got just two properly hot showers in a whole week. The pool is only 1.5 meters deep, so it suits children or garden gnomes. The place calls its restaurant "gastronomic," but it felt more like a canteen. The food was decent, at least the regional products. The car park is too small, so we had to use vacant spaces. After staying here, I'd rate it three stars rather than the advertised five. That's about the level of the two-star campsites in Noirmoutier, which cost less and are better located. A big personal disappointment. Don't be taken in by the good reputation.
It's okay, but too expensive. The service has slipped: our tent was damaged and the cleaning was sloppy, which really surprised me. For pre-teens, making friends on holiday may be hard too, since over half the guests are from the Netherlands.
This municipal campsite is way too expensive, and I won't be back. It's car-free, full of screaming children and empty tents, and the locked gates and code fences make it feel like a penal camp. Even getting to the beach means going through coded gates. Ridiculous. I stayed years ago, when it was called La Sourderie. It was pleasantly busy then. The current so-called manager is a Dutchman who's over the top, doing the job for Mr. Perrin, the previous owner of Camping Moulin.
A lovely spot for kids, right in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the Dutch-speaking manager really understands service. Highly recommended!
